On certain vehicles, there is oil on the dimple of the brake pedal bracket, left from press-manufacturing the bracket. If this problem is left unattended, the oil may enter the contact point of the brake lights switch and carbonize disturbing electrical continuity, which could cause the brake lights to fail and make it impossible to release the A/T shift lock.

Correction: 
The oil on the brake pedal bracket should be wiped clean, and the brake lights switch should be replaced with a new one.
