For the rear drum brakes, the link plates, which bring the brake shoes back to the place when the brake is released, do not have sufficient strength, and therefore they may crack from unanticipated load if the driver repeatedly stops the vehicle by using the parking brake only. If the vehicle continues to be driven with the cracked link plate, the plate may break and a broken piece could be caught between the brake shoe and drum. If this occurs, in the worst case, the rear wheel would lock up, which could adversely affect the stability of the vehicle.
