For rear tandem axle (three axles altogether) vehicles, the breather hoses for the spring type parking brake are not properly positioned, and therefore, water can enter into the spring chambers through the hoses and cause rust on the springs. If the spring breaks, the diaphragm may be damaged allowing air to leak, and in the worst case, the parking brake could be engaged while the vehicle is in motion.

Correction:
The parking brake chambers should be inspected, and the ones with rust should be replaced with the factory approved replacement units. In addition, for the ones that have not passed the replacement date and do not have rust, the breather hoses should be repositioned. For the ones that have passed the replacement date and do not have rust, the vehicle owners should be encouraged to replace them.
