Water can get into the inside of the switch that turns on/off the current to the starter motor, and it could cause rust on the contact point. As a result, it may happen that the switch does not operate properly. If left unfixed, the contact point could overheat failing to cut the current to the starter motor, and in the worst case, the engine starter burns out.
