On certain vehicles, there is not sufficient clearance of the spool valve in the power steering pump, which is to limit the internal pressure to a specified level. Such a spool valve can get stuck when foreign material (sand) is present in power steering fluid. If this occurs, the internal pressure may rise and the inside of the pump may be damaged, in which case the pump could fail to generate pressure, resulting heavier steering.
