RJ-1380-0

For 4WD vehicles with manual transmission, the transmission case and the transfer case may interfere with each other depending on the installation, due to insufficient clearance setting. The interference can cause excessive stress on the differential side bearings, which may break. If the vehicle continues to be driven with such breakage, a broken piece of the side bearings may damage the oil seals, leading oil leakage, which in the worst case could cause the vehicle to stall.

Case Number:

Make/model:

Issued:
Tue, 2005-03-08
Component:
differential
Affected:
983
Correction:
The transmission case and the transfer case should be checked for interference between them. If there is interference, the position of the transfer case should be adjusted, the differential side bearings and the oil seals should be replaced with new ones, and also, the internal parts of the transmission should be inspected and the damaged parts should be replaced with new ones. If there is no interference, the position of the transfer case should be adjusted to ensure sufficient clearance.
