On certain vehicles, the diode in the rectifier in the alternator is not properly installed. If left unfixed, the diode may be damaged and lose some function, in which case excessive current can flow through the rectifier generating heat. If this occurs, in the worst case, the resin parts of the rectifier could melt and fume.
