On certain vehicles, the inside of the diode for the rectifier in the alternator is deformed in manufacturing. If left unfixed, the diode may prematurely deteriorate from heat and eventually be damaged, in which case excessive current can flow through the rectifier generating heat. The resin parts of the rectifier could melt and fume from the heat, which in the worst case could result in a fire.
