On certain vehicles, the universal joint that connects the steering shaft and the gearbox may be insufficiently tightened, and therefore, dry steering can cause the joint to loosen. If this problem is left unattended, abnormal noise may be generated, and in the worst case, the joint could come off, which would make steering operations impossible.
