The ball end fitting of the tailgate support strut may crack due to the shock caused by opening the tailgate fully, because it lacks sufficient strength. Furthermore, repetitive operations of opening and closing the tailgate can cause the crack to grow. At worst, the fitting breaks, causing the support strut to become detached from it, and the tailgate falls off.
