For low-floor 6x4 or 8x4 vehicles, on some of them, the companion flange of the propeller shaft between the rear-front axle and the rear-rear axle is not properly installed, and therefore the spline section of the pinion gear shaft of the rear-rear axle can wear, causing the castle nut to loosen. On some other vehicles, the castle nut is not properly tightened, and so the collar between the propeller shaft bearings can wear, which may damage the bearings causing the castle nut to loosen. If either of these problems is left unattended, the split pin, which prevents the nut from being accidentally loosened, may break causing the companion flange to come out, or the pinion shaft may break. At worst, the propeller shaft could fall off, causing the vehicle to stall.
